A unit on the “inside of the L” of Allegheny Center Building Seven, Apartment 608 is home to Jason Whitehouse and his roommate Curtis. While most one-bedroom apartments have three art students apiece, Apartment 608 has only two. The reason for this is never explained, and the dining room space normally used as a bedroom by a third student is instead occupied by the eponymous ultra low-powered pirate radio station, Dead City Radio.
Development Notes: 608 debuted as hand-crafted digital backgrounds in early DCR strips, some of which are preserved in Candy. The 3d model of Jason’s apartment is based on photo reference attained in 2006, and while it is not an accurate rendering it is close enough to be recognizable as such to anyone who lived in the building during the time in which the story takes place.
As access to 608 could not be engineered, the view is approximated. The exterior area was mocked up roughly, and the mockups were papered over with flat texture maps and then shaded for use in comic panels. 608 is a unique environment for the comic – it’s existed entirely as digital paint, and as a 3d environment bolstered by digital paint and photography.
