Jason Whitehouse, wrapping up some AV work that will generate footage crucial to the events of DCR.1. Also Drugs Are Bad You Shouldn’t Do Drugs and the ease-in towards DCR.1 production values – more of that on the next page.

Also Aeon’s first chronological appearance!

Normally I set up and process scenes either all at once or in multiple pages at a time, mainly to do digital while I can and stack up to drawing when I can. In this case the next page, while set in the same location, has so little to do with this one that it made sense to grind this out now while I have the time – hopefully I’ll be able to follow up with the next page later this week.

2012 11 15, 03:28 – Script cooked forever ago. Rough layout around the same time. Still have to produce the actual panels. This one’s gonna be fun – production values will be transitioning from DCR.5 to DCR.1 here, while filling in a bit of backstory relevant to that installment.

2012 11 17, 00:35 – Perspective reference and backgrounds for the top half of the page are complete. Still pondering the best approach to the bottom half – probably basic 3d reference with the actual backgrounds shopped over the test renders. Same as the top half but slightly more complex easing towards vastly less complex.

2012 11 19, 02:21 – Line art socketed in. As part of the “cross-fade” to DCR.1 production values I’m doing the backgrounds in photoshop. And to save on over-shopping, line art first. Kickin’ it oldskool.

04:12 – Environments assembled; panel thirteen complete. Whitehouse snorting his color palette off is the reason drugs are in this scene at all – as a plot device a sudden blast of cocaine helps to affect the transition from 2012 production values to 2005 production values. More importantly, it ditches skin tone pretty dramatically and adds some weight to the thematic reappearance of color palettes and shading further down the line.

14:45 – Top half shaded. Five down, five remaining. Lighting in the bottom half is a mess – I’ll be winging it to match with the existing cast shadows, which are already an optimization exercise. There’s half a dozen lights casting in the scene mockup and I gave up on “simulating” that many throws back in DCR.3.

15:57 – Basically done. Needs some spit-shining.

This is the first page with no visible 3d assets in a long time. I think the last one produced was DCR 4.11, almost a year ago. While there’s CG in OE 9 and 10, the next 3d interior (read chronologically) will be DCR 1.25.

Mastering notes, 2016.12.05 – Fixed Whitehouse’s arm in panel two – it’s now forward instead of sideways. Also adjusted his glasses in panel three.
