The porn crack wasn’t in the original draft – I threw it in to make up for the massive, massive shortcuts I’ve taken with the new pages – the top panel was supposed to be a splash of different screens, showing porn, news reports, various stock footage… with a From-The-Majestic shot of the Shuttle featuring prominently. The idea had been to give some indication of how the hardware works and looks from the user end of things… but that would have been a truly massive amount of work. Work to the order of West’s Photo Wall on the Epiphany command deck.

The difference between this scene and that is that the West Photo Wall played a big roll in the scene – it wasn’t just background filler, and it appeared in several panels over the course of several pages. It was, to be frank, worth the effort. A similar amount of work for one page, especially at this stage of the game, would have entailed a similar time investment spread over a much smaller area. Not economically feasible – especially when the words leave that much more to your imagination! :)
