Sabrosa: Sickbay

The Sabrosa‘s sickbay is a state-of-the-art modular medical facility. Located at the base of the ship’s “neck,” the sprawling series of compartments features per-compartment life support, advanced particulate scrubbers, dynamically adjustable lighting, and a low population density relative to other parts of the ship. As most Heirotus injuries in The Dualist were fatal, the only patient in the sickbay during Transitional Voices is Thaddeus Gallahad.


Development Notes: While the airbase was the last environment to be worked on for Transitional Voices, the sickbay was the last environment to be built. The hallway is a kit of a few different parts that fit together exactly, and the deck and metal shaders were chosen for their ability to blur the line between character reference models and their corresponding line art. While rendering times are enormous the end effect was worth it – among other things the sickbay was the first environment to be rendered with in-camera depth of field. Previously, I’d “faked” the effect in Photoshop.
