20100120 (5) – Initial cleaning. Removed the Anterior Research logo from Whitehouse’s coffee mug and blammed up the “sunlight” in panels one and two. Not sure how I missed this during the initial de-copyrighting. Maybe I didn’t – maybe I thought I’d let it slide. I THOUGHT WRONG!

20100201 (3) – Rewrite applied. Fairly straight-forward – a couple of minor dialogue changes, with the rest of it being bubble replacement.

Regarding previous – the decision was made to rewrite the entire thing. The story has benefited, though the overall alterations are neither as drastic nor as time consuming as the changes made to The Dualist.

20101225 – Original page metadata:

A major difference between the original draft strips and the final comic – all of those annoying little footnotes have been removed. It’s hard to do anything audio-centric in an effectively silent medium – I figure if it falls flat when Alan Moore does it, I’ve got no business with it either.

2008.04.19 – Cropped and cleaned up a bit.

20101225 – Original strip metadata:

Strip 003. 20050903

Still need to title the intro – I’m thinking Exile on Mainline at the moment, after the Chemlab song. At some point everything labeled “static” will change over – I’d like to get this figured out before I post another strip, but I wanted to have it figured out before I posted this strip, so.

Yeah.

The fun part of any project – dealing with all of those kinky little bits you never expected would crop up… including all of the little gems you’ve repressed from previous projects.

Creator Trademark – I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve used sleep cues as intros / outros / transitions. At least in this case there’s some humor to it. :)

15:20 <@bda> O_o
15:20 <@bda> Sleep cues are easiest.
15:20 * bda did that all the time, too, when writing.
15:25 < solios> bda: yeah they are. Waking up, etc.
15:25 < solios> a shift in awareness, etc.
15:26 <@bda> Easier to bring the reader up to speed.
15:26 < solios> yes.
15:26 < solios> shit, even The Dualist starts with a sleep cue. :P

Edit, 20050922 – Changed the narrative font from DigitalStrip to Courier.

Strip 004, 20050907

Stylistically, DCR is at the same point ATC was at with the first attempt at animal. Still working out the data structure, figuring out how to do a grayscale no-serious-shading comic, etceteras. It’s going to take awhile- in some respects it’s reinventing the wheel, but ATC pages take All Fucking Day and one of the major design goals of DCR is that I can do a comic and actually have a life.

Hah.

Another major design goal is to work with stuff I don’t do in The Dualist. Like motion indicators, and a few other things I’m just not picking up at a pace I’m comfortable with.

That’s an Anterior Research Station mug, and that’s not soda in the glass. Allegheny Center water (at least the liquid that came out of the taps in Building Seven) was bubbly and had a smell that ranged anywhere from astringent to flatulent.

Strip 005. 20050911

‘Gheny corridor floors had some damned scary carpeting. I’m pretty sure it was plaid. If it wasn’t, it may as well have been.

I’m still hung over from last night, despite vitamins and a couple of energy drinks and food and enough water to drown in. Left elbow, foot, hip , and hand are all jacked up from severe door pounding. The big crunch is the fact I had to wake up early for work and securing a replacement key at 0230 hours took some doing, which effectively killed any chance of getting more than a few hours of sleep. Unfortunately the linework reflects this. I’m not doing all that well in the consistency department at the moment (not that I ever have). Hopefully this will be ironed out by the time I get into the first Actual Story Arc…. by which point I should hopefully have a few other things worked out as well.

Update, 20050912, 1510Chris recognized ‘Gheny for what it is, without reading the metadata. Mission accomplished!

Strip 006, 20050912

One of the design ideas behind DCR was more drawing, less photoshopping and so far this hasn’t been the case. :P As it stands, production is handling a lot like ATC, albeit on a vastly smaller scale – something like 1/3 the time, if not a bit less… and this is dragging my ass, really.

Definitely gotta work on the font sizing!

  • Jason Whitehouse’s redneck roommate. Curtis isn’t a terribly complex individual, and is in many was the archetypical art student – interests include but are not limited to video games, anime, Star Trek, tabletop gaming...

  • The king of social engineering, the crown prince of noise, and a self-described “Post-American Electro-Snob.” Jason has a deep interest in industrial, electronic, ambient, metal and gothic music, and a well-researched interest in radio...
